Roblox for Kids: Yes or No?

Roblox is one of the most talked-about games for kids right now. If you’re a parent, you’ve likely heard of it—or your child has begged to download it. But is it actually safe? Is it educational? And what should you know before saying yes (or no)?

As a mom to a 6-year-old who recently discovered Roblox, I did a deep dive into what it’s all about. Here’s what I found—and what you should know.

What is Roblox, Really?

Roblox isn’t just a game. It’s a platform that hosts millions of user-created games, from obstacle courses (obby games) to virtual dress-up and pet adoption simulators. Think of it as YouTube for games—your child can pick what they want to play or even design their own game using Roblox Studio.

It’s incredibly popular with kids aged 6–12, and for many, it’s a social space just as much as a gaming one. Players create avatars, collect items, and interact with others inside these virtual game worlds.

The Pros of Roblox (What Parents Might Actually Like)

• Creativity Boost
  Roblox Studio allows users to create their own games. Kids can learn game design, scripting (basic coding with Lua), and digital storytelling. It’s like Minecraft, but with more creative tools.

• Social Play
  For kids who miss friends after school or during travel, Roblox can offer a way to connect through multiplayer games—like virtual hide-and-seek, restaurant roleplay, or racing challenges.

• Variety of Games
  From simple tycoon simulators to challenging obstacle courses and math games, there’s something for every interest. Some games are even educational.

• Safe Zones for Younger Kids
  Roblox now offers an “experience guide” for age-appropriate games, plus parental control settings to limit access.

• Free to Start
  The app is free to download and play. While many items cost Robux (in-game currency), a lot of games are free and fun without spending anything.

The Cons of Roblox (Why It Might Raise Red Flags)

• Exposure to Strangers
  Roblox has in-game chat. Without the right settings, kids can be exposed to random users—some of whom may use inappropriate language or behave badly. Although Roblox uses filters, they’re not perfect.

• In-Game Purchases Add Up
  Robux is easy to spend—whether it’s for a new outfit, special power, or VIP access to a game. Kids don’t always understand real money value and may ask for more often.

• Inconsistent Game Quality
  Since most games are user-created, some are glitchy, repetitive, or just plain weird. A few may even have scary or inappropriate themes that slip through moderation.

• Screen Time Battles
  Roblox can be highly addictive. The constant rewards, social play, and endless game choices can make it hard for kids to put the device down.

• Online Safety Concerns
  While Roblox has improved safety features, some content still falls through the cracks. Parents need to stay alert, especially with younger kids.

My Honest Take as a Mom

When my daughter first asked for Roblox, I was hesitant. But after testing it myself, reviewing game options, and setting up parental controls, I decided it was okay—with rules.

Here’s how we manage it:

• Her account is set to under 13 with chat disabled.

• We only allow games we’ve checked out together.

• She can only play for a limited time on weekends.

• No random friend requests. If someone she doesn’t know adds her, we decline and block.

• She earns Robux as a reward, not an everyday thing.

It’s not perfect, but it can be fun—and even a bonding activity when we play together.
